Choosing hardwood

Choosing hardwood floors for a Minnesota home.

Hardwood is durable and timeless, but Minnesota's dry winters and humid summers mean installation details matter.

01

Solid vs. engineered hardwood

Solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished many times. Engineered hardwood has a real wood top layer over a stable core, which makes it a better choice for basements and areas with humidity changes.

02

Acclimation and moisture

Wood expands and contracts with humidity. We make sure materials are acclimated and the subfloor is dry and level before installation to reduce gaps and cupping.

03

Species and finish

Oak, maple and hickory are popular choices. Wider planks and matte finishes are common in today's remodels. We'll help you choose what fits your home and lifestyle.

04

Replacing water-damaged floors

If a leak has damaged your floors, we can remove them, dry and repair the subfloor and install new hardwood as part of your restoration.

What our homeowners say.

Our testimonials
“I could not be more happy with Capital City from start to finish. They did a HUGE renovation to my house. I had 5 different contractors bid out the job. I immediately knew when I met Chad he was going to be who I would be going with.”
Erica Ohalloran
“The project included doing a makeover of our front porch, installation of a new front door and replacement of our window shutters. The crew did excellent work. We plan on using them on our next project and will recommend them to anyone.”
Tom and Kim Cambell
“The work was completed before the time he thought it would be done and he did a fantastic job. I would recommend Capital City (and Chad) to any and all who would like some work done.”
